U.S. FDA approves use of implanted microchips in human brains Apr. 13, 2004

    Provided by: Canadian Press

BOSTON (AP) - For years, futurists have dreamed of machines that can read
minds, then act on instructions as they are thought.

Now, human trials are set to begin on a brain-computer interface involving
    implants.

Cyberkinetics Inc. of Foxboro, Mass., has received U.S. Food and Drug
Administration approval to begin a clinical trial in which
four-square-millimetre chips will be placed beneath the skulls of paralysed
    patients.

If successful, the chips could allow patients to command a computer to act
    - merely by thinking about the instructions they wish to send.

It's a small, early step in a mission to improve the quality of life for
victims of strokes and debilitating diseases like cerebral palsy or Lou
Gehrig's. Many victims of such ailments can now survive for long periods
thanks to life support but their quality of life is poor.

"A computer is a gateway to everything else these patients would like to
do, including motivating your own muscles through electrical stimulation,"
said Cyberkinetics chief executive Tim Surgenor.

"This is a step in the process."

The company is far from the only research group active in the field. An
Atlanta company, Neural Signals, has conducted six similar implants as part
of a clinical trial and hopes to conduct more. But for now, its device
contains relatively simple electrodes and experts said Cyberkinetics will
be the first to engage in a long-term, human trial with a more
sophisticated device placed inside a patient's brain. It hopes to bring a
product to market in three to five years.

A number of research groups have focused on brain-computer links in recent
    years.

In 1998, Neural Signals researchers said a brain implant let a paralysed
stroke victim move a cursor to point out phrases like "See you later. Nice
talking with you" on a computer screen.

The next year, other scientists said electrodes on the scalp of two Lou
Gehrig's disease patients let them spell messages on a computer screen.

Cyberkinetics founder Dr. John Donoghue, a Brown University neuroscientist,
attracted attention with research on monkeys that was published in 2002 in
    the journal Nature.

Three rhesus monkeys were given implants, which were first used to record
signals from their motor cortex - an area of the brain that controls
movement - as they manipulated a joystick with their hands. Those signals
were then used to develop a program that enabled one of the monkeys to
continue moving a computer cursor with its brain.

The idea is not to stimulate the mind but rather to map neural activity so
as to discern when the brain is signaling a desire to make a particular
    physical movement.

"We're going to say to a paralysed patient: 'Imagine moving your hand six
inches to the right,"' Surgenor said.

Then, he said, researchers will try to identify the brain activity
associated with that desire. Someday, that capacity could feed into related
devices, such as a robotic arm, that help patients act on that desire.

It's misleading to say such technologies "read minds," said Dr. Jonathan
Wolpaw, of the New York State Department of Health, who is conducting
similar research. Instead, they train minds to recognize a new pattern of
    cause and effect, and adapt.

"What happens is you provide the brain with the opportunity to develop a
    new skill," he said.

Moving the experiment from monkeys to humans is a challenge. Cyberkinetics'
Brain Gate contains tiny spikes that will extend down about one millimetre
into the brain after being implanted beneath the skull, monitoring the
activity from a small group of neurons.

The signals will be monitored through wires emerging from the skull, which
presents some danger of infection. The company is working on a wireless
    version.

But Richard Andersen, a Cal Tech expert conducting similar research, said
the field is advanced enough to warrant this next step.

"I think there is a consensus among many researchers that the time is right
to begin trials in humans," Andersen said, noting surgeons are already
implanting devices into human brains - sometimes deeply - to treat deafness
    and Parkinson's disease.

"There is always some risk but one considers the benefits."

Wolpaw said it isn't clear that it's necessary to implant such devices
inside the brain; other technologies that monitor activity from outside the
skull may prove as effective. But, he said, the idea of brain implants
    seems to attract more attention.

"The idea that you can get control by putting things into the brain appears
to have an inherent fascination," he said.

Andersen, however, said that for now devices inside the brain provide the
    best information.

"It would be nice if in the future some technology comes along that would
let you non-invasively record form the brain," he said.

"MRIs do that. But unfortunately, it's very expensive and cumbersome and
the signal is very indirect and slow."

I believed a similar chip was applied already to party people somewhere in SPAIN where the chip acts sa their AGE IDENTIFICATION and CYBER CASH . Get it scanned and you will be catered if you are a VIP or a regular patron and pay your drinks by getting it scanned .

Normally , they place it in their shoulders and the chip is around the same size of " TIPASI " but flat . SO far , it is very successful and convenient .

i hope that this isn't the one yet...

    http://absbks.tripod.com/reveal.htm

    Rev.13:16
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

The second beast causeth all, and the list is very inclusive of all people. All are required to receive a mark.

In Rev.14:9-10 we are told how serious it is to receive the mark and by implication, that the mark shows a recognition of the person’s accepting and worshipping the beast. “ - if any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:”

We also will read of the punishment and the reward to those who refuse the beast’s demand, “ - I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.” Rev.20:4.

    Rev 13:17
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

We learn in this verse that the mark demanded by the beast, to be put on every person, is related to buying and selling. A person not having the mark, will not be allowed to buy or sell, although it is suggested that having the name of the beast or the number of his name would permit the person to buy and sell. What is included in those last two requirements is not told us.

We realize the importance of refusing the mark of the beast and the reward that will follow by reading verses later in Revelation, as Rev.15:2 “And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.”

    COMMENT:
Continuing from the COMMENT under verse 15, much of the buying and selling of goods and services today is done with a credit or debit card, all directly related to the use of the computer.

A weakness in the use of these cards is that they can be lost or stolen and the card numbers can be used without permission.

It has already been found possible to implant a small computer chip under the skin of a person, that would contain complete information about the person, as well as a positive identification of that person. In buying most anything, the store clerk would simply pass the familiar wand device over the area of the implanted chip in the forehead or hand of the buyer and the transaction would be safely completed.

The convenience and security brought about by the use of such a system is obvious. But just as obvious would be the control a government agency could have over all people by monitoring, regulating or even prohibiting the sale of certain products to selected buyers. With the possibility of a “cashless” society where all buying and selling is done through credit cards or something similar, a government could control the buying methods and habits of the populace.

the chip mentioned is called RFID or RAdio Frequency IDentification. Currently, it is used in animals doe identification of breed, lineage, etc especially for experimentals. Also in agriculture and right now it is used for inventory, automation, tracking, etc. There are different types of these chips that can look like plain paper stickers to metal paltes, chips and some look like tipasi.

In some countries, this has been used in lieu of acredit card and a train ticket. we areusing it here in the philippines for the E-CArd in Toll gates where you just reload your card. In japan there are various usages applied for this chip.

Di ba in the Phils, we have Ragnarok gaming etc. Thing is we cannot store our all time high score somewhere so ragna competitions are done all at the same time. In japan, you just have to buy cards much like time zone only that you buy one card for each type of game. good thing is, it will store your all time top score and present this cards in competitions so gaming doesnt have to happen right then and there.

Cool right? but this could also be dangerous. The Philippines National ID system can benefit from this technology soon if pushed thru.

by the way, they say the kris aquino has her implant already. perhaps for identifaction purposes or tracking purposes. there are types of these chips that transmit signal and can track you whereever you go. Human RObot of the future? heheheh..
