Yeah, the hot scenes imong gi mean sa "The Handmaiden" kay additional icing to the cake, hehehe.. Kay ang plot ug characters sa kani na salida kay nindot pagka construct daan.

Unsa imong masulti sa The Wailing? Ganahan kaayo ko ani nga salida. Although dili pud ni perfect, (taas ra pud kaayo!) pero nindot kaayo pagka place sa mga small details, like items of clothing or paraphernalia, mannerisms ug personalities, nga mohatag nimog clue unsa natong nahitabo sa ending. Kay the characters ended up differently during the last part. Hopefully wala na disturbed imong kid sa "The Wailing" kay naay mga scenes nga puno sa blood and gore! hahaha

Daghan baya nindot nga mga non-English films last year, ang uban lang kay murag dili kaayo accessible for a wider audience [e.g. Things to Come (France), Kaili Blues (China), Embrace of the Serpent (Colombia), After the Storm (Japan), Right Now, Wrong Then (Korea), or Chevalier (Greece)]

The Age of Shadows. hehehe

na anad naman ang akong mga anak ug brutal/gore scenes boss. they are 7 and 9 yrs old. and hilig ni sila ug any movies na WW2 ang theme. i think na impluwensyahan sad nako kay pirme ko nila makit-an motan-aw ug WW2 films. hehe. and that's why i'm hoping to see katong "Land of Mine" na imong gi recommend.

TBH, i'm having doubts in watching those "less accessible" films kay murag di nako masabtan most of the time. lol. especially katong "Holy Motors", wala jud to nako nasabtan. huhu.

Nindot nang "Land of Mine" sir @shagrath_99 sure ko ganahan ka ana, I hope maka watch gyud ka.

Ang mga less accessible na artfilm kay usually kinahanglan kabalo kag backgrounder about ana na movies, like kabalo ka sa previous movies or styles ana na director or mga movies nga gi-reference niya. Labi na sa kanang "Holy Motors" daghan kaayo na mga movies nga gi-reference ug paid homage to (e.g. Lovers on the Bridge, Tokyo, Eyes Without a Face, The Man Who Fell to Earth).

Ang kanindot sa ingon ani na movies kay dili kinahanglan gyud nimo masabtan tanan aspects sa salida, so ang interpretation will differ from one person to another. Kausa rako kita ani pagka 2012 ra pa gyud.. hehe..but sa akong ma remember for me, ang "Holy Motors" is a eulogy on the art: a somber and sad reminiscence on the evolution of filmmaking, from the old b&w (opening), to colorful melodramas, to the musicals (Kylie Minogue singing sequence "Who Were We"), and eventually to the digital art of filmmaking (motion capture). Nya in the past, celluloid film ang gigamit which is now dying because everything is going digital.

It starts with the director himself waking from sleep and opening the door to an audience, it's like he is leading the viewer to the theater for a dreamlike presentation on the art of filmmaking.

It's also about acting. Ang main actor nga si Denis Lavant is a collaborator sa previous movies ni Leos Carax (ang director), nya here he embodied ang mga THE ultimate dramatic roles nga usually tagaan ug awards. Remember iyang pangalan pa gyud kay Mr. Oscar, a reference to The Oscar Awards.

Above all, ang pinaka ganahan nako ani was the intensity and the rawness of the emotions. I cannot remember well the other details, but I thought this was a very original and excellent film. Depende gyud on how you view the film, and that's what makes it interesting.

hmm.. based sa imong gi describe, sir murag gi curious ko balik anang "Holy Motors". I'll watch it again siguro if naa na gyud ko sa good mood, fresh ang mind para mka interpret jud ug maayo. hehe. katong "The Lobster" pud, na intriga pud ko ato.

..and since this thread is about non-english films, kani akong latest na gitan-aw.

Mas straightforward na ang THE LOBSTER sir kaysa Holy Motors. Basically, love story na siya in a dystopian future pero ang naka nindot niya kay whacked out kaayo ang pagka layout sa plot ug characters kay ang director mana sa Dogtooth (Yorgos Lanthimos), so you know nga dapat mag expect kag weirdness. hehehe. Naa baya siya bag-o movie nga nindot pud og reviews after screening sa Cannes last May, "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" ang title.

Wala pa ko kita anang Seklusyon. Apil man diay ni sa MMFF last year no?

In related news, New York film critics Manohla Dargis and AO Scott list 11 non-English language films as part of their 25 best films of the 21st century so far: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...t-century.html

Here's the controversial list; most of the foreign language films (with asterisk) I have recommended in this thread during previous years:
    1. There Will Be Blood
    *2. Spirited Away
    3. Million Dollar Baby
    *4. A Touch of Sin
*5. The Death of Mr Lazarescu
    *6. Yi Yi
    7. Inside Out
    8. Boyhood
    *9. Summer Hours
    10. The Hurt Locker
    11. Inside Llewyn Davis
    *12. Timbuktu
    13. In Jackson Heights
    *14. L'Enfant
    *15. White Material
    16. Munich
    *17. Three Times
    *18. The Gleaners and I
    19. Mad Max: Fury Road
    20. Moonlight
    21. Wendy and Lucy
    22. I'm Not There
    *23. Silent Light
    24. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    25. The 40-Year Old Virgin

I think every cinephile has seen Spirited Away. A Touch of Sin is Jia Zhangke's masterpiece. The Death of Mr Lazarescu may not necessarily be a great representative of the awesome Romanian Film New Wave (4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, Beyond the Hills, or Police Adjective and Cristian Munguiu, Porumboiu more popular choices) but it is a fantastic film.

Yi Yi: A One and a Two is Edward Yang's modernistic masterpiece, but may not please everybody. The same goes for the pleasant French masterwork by Olivier Assayas, Summer Hours. Timbuktu, I have recommended this in previous pages, and it is a remarkable anti-war film.

The Belgian filmmakers, The Dardenne Brothers are represented in the list through L'Enfant, which is great, but I still think their other film "Le Fils" (The Son, 2002) is a lot better. It's so great to see Claire Denis' powerful White Material on the list. Hou Hsiao-hsien's Three Times is also included, which is awesome even though I still think his newest film "The Assassin" is a lot superior.

Agnes Varda's The Gleaners and I is a fantastic film, though you'll have to see her more popular film "Vagabond" to really appreciate her skills a lot more. While Carlos Reygada's Silent Light is a beautiful film, I didn't really care too much about it (too much homage to Dreyer's films, plus many technical amateurish mistakes). It's still better than Post Tenebras Lux, though.

With regard to the English films, I always admired the power of filmmaking showcased in PTA's There Will Be Blood, so it taking the top spot is great. Never really cared too much for Inside Out, Boyhood, Munich, and Moonlight.

Oooh nindot kaayo na ang White Material sir; very powerful, feminist film set in Africa. Isabelle Huppert is an extraordinary actress. Pero ang pinaka favorite nako niya na perf is in Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher. Her collaborations with many directors bring out great performances from her, pero pinakanindot ang movies with Haneke, Chabrol, and Pialat. Perfect sad kaayo siya sa role sa iyang newest movie na Elle.
