    Default New element 117 discovered

    New element 117 discovered

Scientists in Russia and the US have observed the fleeting existence of a new element with 117 protons, produced by firing calcium ions at a radioactive target. The discovery fills in a notable gap in the periodic table and bolsters the idea that neutron-rich superheavy nuclei could be extremely stable, perhaps having lifetimes of many millions of years.

It may be possible but physics world is the most reputable news source for physics for all physicists and other scientists around the world. On the other hand, the research has also not been published but will soon be published so let's wait and see. But most likely, the have really made an important discovery. You can read through the comments of the article below which are written by real scientists. But still, I will wait for the Physics Review Letters publication. hehehe

I might have spoken to soon. They have already published the paper just today. It is features in Phys. Rev. Letters' Viewpoint. This means is really a remarkable breakthrough.

"A collaboration of Russian and US physicists has created the superheavy element 117, an experimental achievement that fills in the final gap on the list of observed elements up to element 118."
