It’s raining gear clinics galore for musicians for the next couple weeks as a number of music distributors have made announcements or dropped broad hints about visiting musicians in town to show off tips and techniques on the latest gear.
Yupangco has announced a Washburn guitar clinic featuring ex-Extreme guitarist
Nuno Bettencourt who will be in town with his current band
Near Death Experience. Not be outdone, German amp and effect outfit Behringer will be bringing in clinicians Martin Engelien (bass) and Alex Beyrodt (guitar) to show off their latest gear. And JB Music has floated stories about the possible visit of either Matt Sorum or Kenny Aronoff for the annual Zildjian day drum clinic.
Sponsored by Washburn guitars, the Nuno Bettencourt clinic takes place at
6 pm on June 9 at the Yupangco HQ in Buendia, Makati. Bettencourt will be backed up by his band Near Death Experience, composed of Population 1 stalwarts Kevin Figuereido on drums, Joe Pessia on bass, and Steve Ferlazzo on keyboards. Most pinoys remember Bettencourt’s distinctive turn on acoustic guitar on that gasgas #1 hit by Extreme, “More Than Words.” However, he’s led an extensive career since then, with bands like
Mourning Widows,
Population 1, and
Near Death Experience.
Bettencourt has also been spotted on a concert DVD recorded in Japan called “Guitar Wars” (quite a topical title nowadays) that featured him along with guitar monsters Paul Gilbert, Steve Hackett, and Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones (playing guitar!).
