Unlike a few years ago, these days ... a scanner is a scanner. They all do the same thing. Unless you want want with a specific purpose, then any general purpose scanner will do.

A few suggestions about comparing flatbed scanners:

    1. DPI (I'd choose one with 3200 x 6400 vs. a model with say, 2400 x 4800)

    2. scan area (choosing between 8.5x11.7 vs 8.5x11? splitting hairs, but a choice still)

    3. USB 2.0 vs. USB 2.0+Firewire (I'd choose the 2nd---good to have the feature available even if I don't need it today)

    4. Transparency adapter (some models do not have this feature---I'd choose one with)

    5. Freebie sofware: The usual image acquistion, basic editing, plus OCR engine.

    6. Price.

    Quality Scanners = HP

I've tried other brands... UMAX, Canon.. unsa pa na diha.... until now... nothing comes close to HP in terms of quality and reproduction.

Guess what newspaper companies are using to scan photos... Old HP scanners...
